They took the contest of the voices, a defining feature of the baroque concerto, and gave it a new twist: Béla Bartók and Igor Stravinsky go magnificently over the top in their works, which often draw on old forms. No instrument wants to be overshadowed by the others. Both compositions also lent a new status to rhythm, one it had never before experienced in the concert hall, in fact positively fired it up. In this concert by the Grafenegg Academy Orchestra, classics by the two composers bookend the sensational Percussion Concerto by Helen Grime, which was premiered by the percussion star Colin Currie in London in 2019 to great success.
